The Council has adopted Codes
and Policies as deemed necessary to maintain and protect the Beagle
breed in Australia. Currently there are three ie vivisection, the
Code of Ethics, and the Hereditary Diseases Policy.
1. Vivisection
In 1990 Council resolved "The Members of the NBC(Aust)
are totally opposed to vivisection. The Secretary and President
are empowered to make representation wherever possible opposing
vivisection and to voice the Council's objections. All Member Clubs
are encouraged to follow the same course."
2. Code Of Ethics
In 1993 Council adopted the ANKC's
Code of Ethics and all Members are bound by it.
3. Hereditory Diseases
The Hereditary Diseases Policy was developed in response
to the ANKC's investigation into possible links between some
inherited diseases/conditions and specific breeds. All Breed Councils
were requested to list diseases which Members thought might have
a higher than average incidence in their breed, and Member Clubs
put forward the following suggestions:- cervical calcification,
dry eye, cherry eye, epilepsy, hip dysplasia, congenital cataracts
and "Chinese Beagle" syndrome. After extensive research
and discussion, the conclusion was reached "that
the Beagle cannot be classified as particularly suffering from any
inherited diseases, and there is no reason for imposing any mandatory
testing regulations for any particular disease at this time."
However hip dysplasia, epilepsy and invertebral
disc disease were noted as worthy of monitoring.
